Tech Pack Template: What Every Factory Needs to Quote Accurately
The difference between a $2,000 prototype and a $200 nightmare often comes down to one document. Here's exactly what to include — from a factory's perspective.

1. What Is a Tech Pack (In 30 Seconds)
A tech pack — short for technical package — is the instruction manual a factory uses to make your garment. Think of it as the bridge between your design idea and a sewing machine operator who has never seen your brand.
It tells the factory:
- What the garment looks like (flat sketches, callouts)
- What materials to use (fabric, trims, labels)
- How big it should be (measurements for every size)
- How to put it together (construction details, stitch types)
- How to finish it (packaging, folding, hang tags)
Without a tech pack, a factory has to guess. And factories hate guessing — because wrong guesses mean remakes, wasted fabric, and angry clients. That's why a vague inquiry gets a vague quote, and a detailed tech pack gets an accurate one.
2. Why a Bad Tech Pack Costs You Money
Here's what happens when your tech pack is incomplete:

3. The 8 Sections Every Factory Needs
We've produced over 500 styles for 100+ brands. Here's what our production team actually looks for when reviewing a tech pack:
Cover Page — Style Overview
Style number, season, date, designer name. Include a front-and-back flat sketch (black and white, no color). This is the first thing the pattern maker sees.
Construction Callouts — Every Detail Matters
Use arrows and notes on your flat sketch to show: seam types (overlock, coverstitch, flatlock), hem finishes, pocket placements, pleat directions, dart locations. Specify thread color and stitch density (SPM — stitches per minute).
Bill of Materials (BOM) — The Complete Ingredients List
Every material that goes into the garment: shell fabric, lining, pocketing, ribbing, interfacing, thread, buttons, zippers, drawstrings, eyelets, elastic. For each: fiber composition, weight (GSM), color, supplier reference, placement.
Color Specs — Pantone or It Doesn't Count
"Navy blue" means 50 different things. Specify Pantone TCX codes for every color. Include a color swatch or digital reference. For prints: provide a true-to-size print file with color separation.
Measurement Chart — With Tolerances
List every Point of Measure (POM): chest width, body length, sleeve length, shoulder width, neck opening. Include the measurement for each size in your range, not just the base size. Most importantly: add a tolerance column (+/- 1cm for woven, +/- 1.5cm for knit).
Label & Branding Placement
Neck label (woven or printed?), size label, care label, flag label, hang tag, poly bag sticker. Include a diagram showing exact placement from a reference point (e.g., "neck label: 2cm below back neck seam, centered").
Packaging & Folding Instructions
How should the finished garment be folded? In a poly bag or hanging? What size poly bag? Include a tissue paper? Carton dimensions and markings? This is often forgotten until the first shipment arrives completely wrong.
Fit Comments & Sample History
Leave space for factory feedback after each sample round. Record what changed from proto to fit sample to pre-production. This creates a paper trail and prevents the same mistake twice.

5. The 5 Mistakes That Double Your Sampling Cost
Mistake #1: Using artistic sketches instead of flat technical drawings
Fashion illustrations look beautiful but they're useless for pattern making. A factory needs to see seam lines, not style lines. Use Adobe Illustrator or free tools like Canva to create proportionally accurate flats.
Mistake #2: Guessing measurements instead of measuring a sample garment
If you don't have a sample to measure, buy a garment that fits the way you want, take it apart, and measure every panel. Don't estimate — a 1cm error on a chest measurement changes the entire fit.
Mistake #3: Omitting fabric sourcing information
"100% cotton" is not enough. Is it combed or carded? Ring-spun or open-end? What's the GSM? Single jersey or interlock? The same fiber content can feel completely different depending on construction.
Mistake #4: Changing specs after sampling starts
Every change after the first sample costs money. Finalize your tech pack before sending it to the factory. The only changes during sampling should be fit corrections based on the physical sample — not design changes.
Mistake #5: Sending the tech pack without reviewing it yourself
Read your tech pack as if you've never seen the design. Can you picture the finished garment? If any section makes you pause, the factory will pause too — and then guess.
6. Using Tech Packs for Quality Control
Your tech pack isn't just for the factory — it's your quality control bible during production.
During inline QC: QC inspectors compare the garment on the line against the measurement chart and construction callouts. If a seam doesn't match the spec, it's flagged immediately.
During final inspection: Every Point of Measure is checked against the tech pack tolerance. If chest width is supposed to be 52cm +/- 1cm and measures 54.5cm, the unit fails AQL inspection.
During shipping: Packaging specs ensure your products arrive folded, bagged, and cartoned exactly as your warehouse expects.
Without a detailed tech pack, QC becomes subjective. "Looks about right" is not a standard. Your tech pack makes quality objective and measurable.

Can I create a tech pack without Adobe Illustrator?
Yes. Use Canva (free), Figma (free), or even PowerPoint for basic flat sketches. The key is proportion and clarity, not software. For measurements, use our Excel template.
How long does it take to create a tech pack?
For a simple T-shirt with 1 fabric and no complex construction: 2-4 hours. For a jacket with lining, multiple fabrics, and hardware: 1-2 days. The first one takes the longest — after that, you can copy and modify for new styles.
Do I need a different tech pack for each colorway?
Usually no. One tech pack covers all colorways if the construction and measurements are identical. Just add a colorway page showing which colors apply to which fabric positions. If the construction differs (e.g., a printed version vs. an embroidered version), create separate tech packs.
Can the factory create the tech pack for me?
Some factories offer tech pack creation as a paid service ($200-500 per style). However, we recommend creating your own or hiring a freelance technical designer. Why? Because the tech pack is your quality standard. If the factory writes it, they control the tolerances and specifications — which may favor their production efficiency over your product quality.
What's the difference between a tech pack and a spec sheet?
A spec sheet is just the measurement table. A tech pack includes the spec sheet plus sketches, BOM, color specs, construction details, and packaging instructions. Think of the spec sheet as one chapter of the tech pack.
How do I know if my tech pack is good enough?
Test it: Give your tech pack to someone who's never seen your design and ask them to describe the garment. If their description matches your vision without questions, your tech pack is ready. If they ask "what do you mean by..." three or more times, it needs more detail.
