Fabric Shrinkage Test Guide: How to Prevent Size Changes After Production
A practical factory guide to testing shrinkage, reading the result, setting tolerances, and correcting the pattern before bulk cutting.

1. Why Shrinkage Must Be Tested Before Bulk
A size chart describes the finished garment. Fabric, however, changes as it relaxes, absorbs water, receives heat, and dries. If the factory cuts bulk fabric before measuring that change, a correctly graded pattern can still produce garments that finish short, narrow, twisted, or inconsistent after the first wash.
Shrinkage testing is therefore not only a laboratory exercise. It connects fabric approval to pattern approval. The result tells the pattern maker whether length and width need compensation before cutting begins.
This matters most for cotton jersey, fleece, rib, denim, linen, rayon blends, and fabrics with mechanical stretch. It also matters when a new dye lot, finishing process, fabric mill, or wash recipe is introduced. Two fabrics with the same fiber content and GSM can behave differently because knitting tension and finishing are different.
2. Relaxation, Washing, and Drying Shrinkage
Factories use the word “shrinkage” for several related changes. Your test request should state which condition matters.

The care label must match the test method. Testing with a cold gentle wash is not useful if the final label allows a warm machine wash and tumble dry.
3. The Factory Shrinkage Test Method
A practical production test follows a controlled sequence. The exact standard can vary by buyer, market, and laboratory, but the discipline should remain the same.
- Condition the fabric. Let the roll or test piece relax in the agreed environment before marking it.
- Mark a measured area. Place stable reference marks in both the length and width directions. Do not measure from a cut edge that may curl or fray.
- Record the original dimensions. Measure without stretching the fabric and keep the test record with the fabric lot number.
- Wash and dry using the care-label method. Record water temperature, cycle, detergent, drying method, and number of cycles.
- Condition the specimen again. Do not measure a wet or hot sample immediately after drying.
- Measure the same reference points. Calculate length and width separately, then check skew and surface appearance.
For important programs, test more than one swatch and repeat the test when the bulk fabric lot arrives. A development swatch proves the concept; the bulk roll test protects the actual order.
4. How to Calculate Shrinkage Percentage
If a marked length changes from 50 cm to 48 cm, the length shrinkage is 4%. If the width changes from 50 cm to 49 cm, the width shrinkage is 2%. Record the result as −4% length / −2% width. A positive change should be identified as growth rather than hidden inside one average.
Length and width must not be combined into a single number. A fabric that loses 5% in length but grows 1% in width creates a different pattern problem from a fabric that loses 2% in both directions.
5. What Is an Acceptable Tolerance?
There is no universal pass number for every garment. The acceptable limit depends on the fiber, construction, wash method, product type, customer expectation, and finished measurement tolerance. As a planning guide—not a substitute for an agreed test standard—brands often target tighter control for stable fabrics and allow more movement for natural fibers or garment-washed styles.

Write the approved tolerance into the tech pack or quality manual. “Pre-shrunk” is a marketing description, not a measurable acceptance criterion.
6. How Results Change the Pattern
Pattern compensation is applied by direction. If the fabric consistently shrinks more in length than width, the pattern may need additional length while the width remains almost unchanged. Rib trims, body fabric, pocketing, and lining may each need separate data because they do not necessarily move together.
The corrected pattern should be verified through a sample made from the approved fabric and washed using the intended care method. This is where the sampling process and the size grading plan meet: the unwashed garment, washed garment, and size chart must all tell the same story.
Do not rely on mathematical compensation alone when the fabric also twists, puckers, becomes stiff, loses color, or changes surface texture. Those are fabric or finishing problems, not only measurement problems.
7. What to Confirm Before Bulk Cutting
- Fabric identity: composition, GSM, knit or weave, finish, color, and supplier lot match the approval.
- Relaxation time: the factory has defined how long fabric rests before spreading and cutting.
- Test method: wash temperature, cycle, drying method, and number of cycles match the care label.
- Directional results: length, width, growth, skew, and appearance are recorded separately.
- Pattern action: compensation is documented, not left as a verbal instruction.
- Washed sample: the corrected garment passes fit and measurement checks after laundering.
- Bulk lot check: incoming fabric is compared with the approved development lot before all panels are cut.
