Apparel development reference

Start with a size.
Develop the right fit.

Compare adult US, UK and European clothing size references, then turn your target customer and preferred silhouette into a clear development brief.

01

Body measurements

Measurements of the person. Use these to describe the intended customer and compare a source chart.

02

Regional size labels

US, UK, EU and letter labels. A label match does not guarantee the same body range or fit.

03

Garment specification

The finished garment’s dimensions. Add the intended ease and confirm the result through sampling.

US, UK & European size tables

Adult clothing and caps.
Source-specific references, not one universal standard.

Source cm and inch figures are retained, including original rounding. Size labels never change with the unit selector.

Check the chart’s source and scope before using it. Brands define their own fits and size boundaries. Body dimensions, garment dimensions and label conversions are different types of information; do not substitute one for another.

01

Body measurements

Use chest or bust, waist and hip measurements to identify a reference range. These are not finished garment dimensions.

What about unisex and oversized clothing?

“Unisex” describes an intended audience; “oversized” describes a fit. Neither supplies a universal size conversion. Choose a reference block, specify the wearer and key body measurements, then agree chest width, shoulder width, body length and sleeve dimensions for the actual garment.

Petite, tall and curve ranges: these describe a brand’s proportions or collection, not a universal adjustment to a letter size. Develop their length, balance and grading separately with an appropriate fit reference.

Caps & hats

Use head circumference.

A
Head circumference determines the intended wearer. Agree the finished inner opening measurement separately.
B

“One size” does not mean every head size. For fitted hats, confirm the source chart and finished fit.

Agree the sample condition. Note whether measurements are taken before or after washing or finishing. Confirm tolerances and grading increments in writing; do not assume a universal allowance.

When measuring the person: keep the tape level and comfortably close to the body. Follow the source chart’s chest or bust, natural waist and hip definitions. Do not pull the tape tight or add garment ease to the body measurement.

No size chart? You can still start.

Send a fit brief.
Then confirm a sample.

You do not need to invent a complete measurement chart. Give us a clear starting reference so the pattern and sample requirements can be reviewed.

  1. Describe the customer. Target market, intended wearer and size range.
  2. Describe the silhouette. Regular, slim, relaxed, boxy or oversized, plus fabric and stretch.
  3. Share a useful reference. A garment, clearly labelled brand chart, or measurements from clothing that fits as intended.
  4. Agree before production. Base-size measurements, grading, tolerances and sample approval.

Photos help communicate styling. They cannot establish accurate garment measurements on their own.

Discuss my fit brief

Common sizing questions

Before you choose a size.

Can I simply request a “US medium”?

Use it as an initial reference, then identify the specific chart or reference garment. US medium is not one universal garment measurement. Confirm the intended customer, silhouette, fabric and base-size specification before approving a sample.

Should a garment chest width match the body chest measurement?

No. A body chest measurement normally describes circumference; a flat garment chest measurement describes width. The finished garment also needs an agreed amount of ease for the intended fit and fabric. Confirm the measurement method rather than treating the figures as interchangeable.

Can I convert a women’s size directly into a men’s or unisex size?

Do not rely on a label-only conversion. Compare the relevant body dimensions and garment dimensions, including shoulder, chest or bust, hip and length. A unisex range needs a specified reference block and an agreed fit review.

Do these charts replace a tech pack or an approved size set?

No. They help you communicate a starting point. Production requires project-specific garment measurements, measurement methods, grading rules and tolerances, with the agreed sample approval process.
