How factories turn a color reference into a production-ready dye recipe—lab dips, light sources, shade bands, and the approval steps that keep bulk fabric on color.

1. Why Color Matching Is a Pre-Production Gate
Color is the first thing a customer sees, and it is the first place a production order can go wrong. A brand picks a specific shade from a Pantone card, a printed catalogue, or a previous garment—and then expects hundreds of units to arrive in exactly that color. A screen, a paper print, and dyed fabric never behave the same way, so the factory must translate the reference into a dyed fabric standard before bulk begins.
Color matching is also a fabric problem, not only a dye problem. The same dye recipe can look different on combed cotton, slub jersey, brushed fleece, or recycled polyester because fiber content, yarn twist, GSM, and finishing all affect how color is reflected. A shade approved on lightweight single jersey may not be achievable on heavy fleece without recipe adjustment. Treat color approval as a pre-production gate: no approved lab dip, no bulk dyeing. When this gate is enforced, color problems become a sampling discussion instead of a finished-goods claim.
2. What a Lab Dip Is (and What It Is Not)
A lab dip is a small swatch of the actual fabric, dyed in a laboratory or sample dyeing machine using the proposed bulk dye recipe. It is the first physical answer to the question: “Can this fabric hit this color?” The factory submits it for the brand to approve before production.
A lab dip is not a paper print, a Pantone chip, or a digital mockup. Paper and chips are useful color targets, but they are not fabric references. Even a perfect lab dip is a promise made under lab conditions—it must still be confirmed against a bulk swatch from the production dye lot before cutting.
When you submit a color reference, always specify the fabric base, weight, construction, and finish. A color standard without a fabric specification leaves the factory guessing which dye class and recipe to use.
3. The Lab Dip Approval Workflow
A disciplined approval workflow keeps the process to one or two rounds instead of five. Most delays come from vague comments like “make it brighter” or from approving under a single light source.
- Send a physical standard. Provide the target color, fabric quality, GSM, and the required light sources. A fabric cutting is always better than a Pantone number alone.
- Factory submits lab dip. The lab dyes one or more variations, records the recipe, and attaches a submission form. Some factories submit two or three close dips at once so the buyer can choose.
- Evaluate under controlled light. Check the dip under at least two light sources—typically artificial daylight and the light used in your selling environment. If you do not have a light booth, evaluate next to a window at the same time of day.
- Approve or reject with actionable comments. “Too yellow,” “too dull,” or “10% lighter” is more useful than “not quite right.” Mention the light source where the mismatch appears.
- Lock the approved recipe. Once approved, the lab dip and its recipe become the production reference. A duplicate lab dip is kept in the factory and one is sent back to the buyer.

Build lab dip time into the development calendar. Sampling, lab dips, and sample approval run in parallel, but a late color approval can push back fabric sourcing and bulk delivery.
4. Light Sources, Metamerism, and Viewing Conditions
The same fabric can look different under store lighting, office lighting, and daylight. When two colors match under one light source but not another, the effect is called metamerism. A lab dip should be checked under the light sources where the garment will actually be sold.

For a practical approval, check every lab dip under D65 plus the light source that represents your customer's environment. If you sell online, D65 plus TL84 is a solid default. If your brand has physical retail, add the store lighting to the approval standard.
Instrumental color reading with a spectrophotometer gives a Delta E number; visual judgment under a light booth is still the final call for most apparel programs. The two methods work together—the instrument catches direction and magnitude, and the eye catches whether the mismatch actually matters on a garment.
5. Shade Bands and Color Tolerance
Dyeing is a chemical process, and no two production lots come out absolutely identical. A shade band is the accepted range around the approved standard. Within one order, all panels should be cut from fabric that falls inside the same shade band.
Color tolerance should be agreed before bulk, not negotiated after a problem appears. Two common levels are used in apparel production:

Instrumental tolerances are usually expressed as Delta E CMC(2:1). A typical production tolerance for solid colors is around 0.8–1.2 for critical panels and 1.5 or wider for less critical components. Agree the number, the light source, and the pass/fail rule in writing.
6. Bulk Shade Lots and Color Continuity
Lab approval is only the first half of the color story. Bulk fabric is dyed in lots, and each lot can land slightly lighter, darker, or different in tone. A bulk swatch—a cutting from the actual production dye lot—must be approved before the factory spreads and cuts the fabric.
Factories control this with shade lots. They evaluate each finished roll under a light booth, group rolls into shade bands, and label them (A, B, C, or by lot number). Cutting and sewing then use one shade band per style and size run. For garments with multiple panels, all pieces must come from the same band; for orders with multiple size runs, adjacent sizes should be grouped by band so store racks look continuous.
Reorders need the same discipline. A new dye lot may fall inside the accepted band but still differ from the first order. If your customer is reordering a bestseller, compare the new bulk swatch with a retained reference from the previous order, not only with the lab dip.

7. What to Confirm Before Bulk Cutting
- Approved lab dip: signed, dated, and matched to a locked recipe.
- Bulk swatch: approved from the actual production dye lot, not the lab sample.
- Light sources: the approval standard states which lights were used and the pass/fail condition.
- Shade band policy: rolls are grouped by shade band and the cutting plan keeps panels and adjacent sizes consistent.
- Rib, trim, and thread: separate color approval for every component that touches the garment.
- Fastness requirements: color is approved for wash, light, and crocking performance, not appearance alone.
- Retained references: the buyer and factory each keep an approved cutting for reorders and claims.
