Short answer: calculate shipping from the final packed cartons, not garment quantity alone. Confirm exterior dimensions, gross weight, carton count and units per carton; calculate CBM; apply the quoted weight rule; then allocate the written transport total across saleable units.

1. How Do You Calculate Clothing Shipping Cost?

Start with final carton data, calculate volume and chargeable weight, then apply the current route-specific quote.

Two orders with the same piece count can have different shipping costs. Fabric weight, folding method, individual bags, hangers, inserts, retail boxes and unused space can all change the packed dimensions or gross weight. A garment count without a carton plan is therefore an early estimate, not a bookable shipping calculation.

Collect these inputs for every carton size: carton count; sealed exterior length, width and height; gross weight per carton; units per carton; total saleable units; destination postcode or port; cargo-ready date; and any stackability or handling restriction.

Volumetric kg134.4

Results are unrounded planning values. Your quote may round each carton, apply another divisor or use weight-and-measure and minimum-charge rules.

2. How to Calculate CBM for Clothing Cartons

Multiply each sealed carton’s exterior dimensions, convert the result to cubic metres, then add every carton group.

For one illustrative carton measuring 60 × 40 × 35 cm, the volume is 0.084 CBM: 60 × 40 × 35 ÷ 1,000,000. Eight identical cartons occupy 0.672 CBM.

Measure the outside of the carton after it is packed and sealed, including any bulge. An internal box specification, an empty sample box or a catalogue dimension may not match the space the finished shipment occupies.

Jackets660 × 40 × 35 cm0.0840.504
Accessories250 × 35 × 30 cm0.05250.105
Total80.609

Use one worksheet row per carton size instead of multiplying a guessed “average carton” across the order. If goods are palletised, also provide the outside dimensions and gross weight of the completed palletised load.

Recalculate whenever the pack-out changes. Individual bags, tissue, inserts, hangers, presentation boxes and protective material can increase volume. Packaging components are product decisions too, so approve them before asking for a final freight quotation.

3. Actual, Volumetric and Chargeable Weight

Applicable parcel services may bill the higher of actual and volumetric weight, using their own divisor and rounding rules.

Conceptual image: bulky garments may occupy more chargeable volume than denser garments. The quoted divisor and service rules determine the billed weight; the image does not show a measured result.

Actual weight is the scale reading. Volumetric weight converts occupied space into a weight value. Chargeable weight is the billing quantity produced by the selected service’s rules.

According to DHL Express’s published weight guidance, its standard metric example divides cubic centimetres by 5,000 and compares volumetric weight with actual weight. UPS publishes different dimensional factors for different US rate types. That variation is why no single divisor should be treated as universal.

Illustrative calculation A 60 × 40 × 35 cm carton with a quoted divisor of 5,000 has a volumetric weight of 16.8 kg. If its actual gross weight is 12.4 kg, its preliminary chargeable weight is 16.8 kg before the quotation’s rounding rules. Eight identical cartons total 99.2 actual kg and 134.4 unrounded volumetric kg.

A carrier may round dimensions or weight per carton before totalling the shipment. Record the carton number, exterior dimensions, gross weight, units inside, quoted divisor, preliminary result and carrier-rounded result so the invoice can be reconciled later.

4. Convert a Freight Quote into Cost per Garment

Divide the transport charges included in your chosen scope by saleable units, while keeping duties and production costs separately labelled.

For an illustrative worksheet with 500 saleable garments and USD 960 of included transport-related charges, the allocation is USD 1.92 per garment. The USD 960 figure demonstrates the formula only; it is not a current market rate or a GoVoloom quotation.

Before dividing, label what the quote includes: pickup or origin handling, main transport, destination handling or delivery, fuel or peak surcharge, insurance and other named services. Different lines may be charged per shipment, document, carton, kilogram or CBM.

Keep import duties and taxes outside this narrow transport worksheet. They depend on destination, classification, customs value and importer circumstances. For the broader budget, use our clothing manufacturing cost breakdown and confirm customs amounts with the responsible broker or authority.

If a shipment contains samples, replacements or non-saleable pieces, state whether their freight remains a development cost or is allocated across saleable stock. Also record the quotation date and validity period: a correct formula with an expired rate is not a usable budget.

5. Plan Cartons That Cost Less Without Damage

Test a compact pack-out with production-equivalent garments, but reject any option that distorts the product or carton.

Conceptual image: compare carton configurations before bulk shipment, then reduce volume only when garments and retail packaging remain protected.

Carton optimisation is not maximum compression. It balances freight efficiency with product protection, handling, warehouse receiving and presentation requirements. Run a physical trial using the approved folding method and production-equivalent garments, bags, labels and inserts.

Check that garments retain their shape after unpacking, the carton closes without bulging, exterior dimensions remain stable after sealing, the gross weight can be handled safely, protective materials still work and size-colour assortments remain practical for receiving.

Illustrative planCartonsUnits per cartonExterior sizeTotal CBM
A83560 × 40 × 35 cm0.672
B74060 × 40 × 33 cm0.5544

Plan B uses 0.1176 CBM less in this example, a 17.5% reduction. It becomes the better plan only if the test confirms there is no excessive compression, permanent creasing, carton distortion or unsafe carton weight.

For LCL cargo, the quote may use weight-and-measure units rather than parcel-style dimensional kilograms. In one named example, Maersk’s published LCL terms define a WMU from the higher of gross CBM or gross kilograms, with 1 CBM equated to 1,000 kg under that agreement. This is not a universal LCL rule; your forwarder’s written conversion, minimum and line-item basis control.

Before booking, ask for the dimensions and weights used, divisor or LCL conversion, rounding method, minimum billable quantity, shipment-level charges, exclusions, remeasurement process and quote validity. Locking these details into the manufacturing timeline prevents packaging changes from becoming a dispatch delay.

Frequently asked questions

What is CBM in clothing shipping?

CBM is the cubic volume occupied by packed cargo. Multiply a carton’s exterior length, width and height in metres, then multiply by the number of identical cartons.

How do I calculate CBM when carton sizes differ?

Calculate every carton-size group separately and add the group totals. Do not apply one average size unless every shipped carton actually matches it.

Is air shipping charged by actual or volumetric weight?

Applicable parcel and air services may compare actual and volumetric weight and use the higher figure, but the carrier’s current divisor and rounding rules control.

Why did the carrier remeasure my cartons?

The sealed exterior carton can differ from its nominal size because of board thickness, bulging or measurement rounding. Keep a pre-shipment record and compare it with billed dimensions.

How do I calculate shipping cost per garment?

Add the transport-related charges included in your chosen scope, then divide by saleable units. Keep duties, taxes and unrelated production costs separately labelled.

Can vacuum packing always reduce clothing freight cost?

No. Compression can change presentation, loft, creasing or product shape. Use it only after the garment and packaging requirements have been tested and approved.
